Letter to Parents/Guardians
July 28,2025
Dear Students and Parents:
On behalf of all of us at Copper Canyon Elementary School, I would like to welcome you to another great school year! Whether you are new to our school, just moving into the area or have been with us previously, I wish you warm regards as we anticipate an exciting year of student learning and achievement. One that we hope is rewarding for everyone associated with our great school. The Copper Canyon staff believes that ALL children can learn and are committed to providing students with an appropriate learning environment that will help achieve essential teaching and learning.
An effective and positive educational setting is one where the home, school, and community work together collaboratively to provide meaningful learning experiences, and a safe and orderly environment for its students. Parents are strongly encouraged to be an active partner in the school as we are cultivating a safe, consistent learning environment where each student learns, grows, and achieves personal success. A school’s climate and culture are a direct reflection upon its success. We anticipate many successes this year as we encourage students to “Build a Foundation for Success”. The school will continue to maintain high standards for academic excellence, student achievement, and social expectations. We expect our Coyotes to give their best effort with all they attempt.
We all have an obligation to help our school have the finest learning environment possible. Copper Canyon Elementary staff is comprised of caring individuals who make every effort to create and maintain a feeling of “becoming and belonging” within our school community. We believe that motivating children to love learning, learn independently, and grow socially are paramount to this experience. With help from faculty, staff, parents, and our community, these goals can be realized. Together we provide a safe and nurturing environment where meaningful work is accomplished, and an appreciation of individual differences is fostered with dedication, integrity, and professionalism. We believe that within this atmosphere of trust and decency, students are encouraged to be responsible citizens and leaders.
I want to thank you in advance for your confidence and support of Copper Canyon Elementary School as we continue our PLC Journey. If there is anything I can do now or during this new school year, please contact me at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
Terri Chynoweth, Principal
Philosophy of Education
** Doing What’s Best for Kids**
Structuring the School for Student Success
High Expectations: We believe that every child is a person of value who is capable of learning and wants to be challenged. Each unique individual deserves a quality educational experience with equal access to diverse growth opportunities that will help them to achieve their potential and ultimately become successful. We envision a school without barriers where appropriate risk-taking is accepted and encouraged.
Positive Climate: We believe in the power and potential of the human spirit, and we believe that people are innately good. We want to create a safe, caring, friendly, and nurturing learning environment that celebrates individual differences and respects cultural diversity… a place where students feel like they are wanted and belong to a part of something greater than themselves… where they have the freedom to explore their own creative potential…uninhibited.
Instructional Excellence: We want to provide our students with a solid foundation in the “basics” that emphasizes reading and writing across the curriculum with a focus on keeping kids at or above academic grade level in conjunction with the Utah State Core Curriculum. At the same time, we want to cultivate critical thinking skills in our students and challenge them to “think outside the box.” We value academic learning time as meaningful and seek to provide quantifiable measures of student progress.
Community Of Learners: We believe that learning is relationship driven and should be student-oriented. We want to surround our students with the best available adult role models where teachers as leaders can and do make a difference. We want to create a community of learners where students, faculty, staff, and parents ALL learn, grow, and evolve together.
Character Education: We are committed to developing honest, caring, respectful citizens who will make positive contributions to society and live meaningful lives. We encourage our students to value friendship and to interact positively with each other as they accept responsibility for belonging to a group. We want them to be passionate and compassionate as they participate in activities that will promote good citizenship and develop leadership qualities.
“Real World” Preparation: We believe in the edification of our society through the preservation of democratic principles. We want to emphasize practical applications and skill acquisition that students can take with them in the future. We want to provide hands-on experiences and expose students to new ideas, people, and places that will motivate them to become self-directed, lifelong learners.

Student Code of Conduct
We believe it is a privilege to be enrolled at Copper Canyon Elementary School. We take our professional responsibility very seriously as representatives of the school. And, as students you are expected to accept your individual responsibilities in the following five areas:
-
RESPECT for Yourself and the Rights of Others:
Every right has an obligation attached to it. Your rights must be balanced against the rights of others, just as their rights must be balanced against yours. Also, the purpose of our school and the requirements of the educational process must be weighed in deciding who has a right to do what and which behaviors are acceptable. Besides following the “Golden Rule,” we also need to follow the “Platinum Rule.” That is, treating others with the courtesy, dignity, and respect that we would like to be treated with.
-
RESPONSIBILITY for Your Own Actions:
Your first responsibility is to decide how you should conduct yourself while you are at school. You will be held responsible only for the things you do or fail to do. What others choose to do or not do is of little importance in determining whether or not you choose to accept responsibility as a student-citizen of Copper Canyon Elementary School. The decisions you make are yours, as are the corresponding rewards and consequences.
-
Follow Directions the First Time Given:
You deserve the best instruction that Copper Canyon Elementary School has to offer. In order for the efforts of the teachers and staff to be successful and for you to work and achieve your potential, you must cooperate with us and do all the things you are asked to do… and to do them the first time you are asked without complaint or question. Compliance with requests is key to collective success. Non-compliance with staff directives will not be tolerated.
-
Keep Hands, Feet, Mouth, and All Objects to Yourself:
Everyone has their own personal space that needs to be respected by others. A good rule of thumb to guide your behavior, again, is to follow the “Golden & Platinum Rules.” Don’t touch other students and/or personal property that does not belong to you. This includes pushing or shoving, hitting or kicking, horse-playing or teasing. Running indoors is not allowed, nor is saying unkind or inappropriate things. Besides the classroom, these behaviors are not welcome in any of the common areas ie. hallways, restrooms, lunchroom, playground, etc. Be a good citizen!!!
-
BE THERE --- BE READY
You have an obligation to be in class, on time, and prepared to give your best effort each and every day. Just as your teachers must come prepared to teach, you and your classmates must come to school prepared to learn---ready to take advantage of the educational opportunities our school offers.
School Rules
Copper Canyon Elementary students are always expected to uphold and maintain good behavior. The following school rules will enhance our Student Code of Conduct and will assist us in having the very BEST behavior we can achieve. Classroom teachers may have some additional rules to be followed in their rooms and these will be shared individually by teachers as they pertain to their own classes.
Help Others
Obey Rules
Work Hard
Listen and Learn
Show Respect, Responsibility and Safety
Whenever any question arises about how to handle any situation, please remember to think about and use the HOWLS Philosophy and the Student Code of Conduct. That way, you will have the best opportunity for success!
Student Attendance
Regular school attendance is very important to maintain continuity in the educational process. It has a direct impact on a student’s level of academic achievement. School attendance is a student/parent/school responsibility. Students and parents have the primary responsibility to promote consistent, daily, punctual attendance as directed by Utah State Law, U. C. A. 53A-11-101 et. seq. Students not complying with the attendance policy will be referred to our District Office for further assistance. It should be primarily the responsibility of the school to provide, monitor, and adjust appropriate curriculum and educational opportunity as directed by Utah State Law.
The administration and staff of Copper Canyon Elementary School believes that students need to be in class, on time, ready to learn, every school day. We expect students at Copper Canyon Elementary School to take advantage of the educational opportunities offered to them. Therefore, we request that you please contact the school office and let us know when your child is going to be absent. Only absences that have been excused with a phone call or signed parent note will be considered for an excused absence. (This must be accomplished within 3 days of returning to school).
Tooele County School District policy states…. “A student may be excused for a reasonable period of time from school in cases of illness, medical or dental appointments, death in the immediate family, or acts of nature which may endanger the child. All other absences shall be unexcused unless the building principal, prior to the absence and at the request of a parent, agrees to excuse the student for a specific purpose.
Students should be excused only for that part of the school day necessary to satisfy their specific need for absence. Students with an excused absence shall be afforded an opportunity to make up any school work, quizzes, tests, etc. missed as a result of the absence.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that all make-up work, as a result of an excused absence, is completed and turned in. Students need to make arrangements with their teacher within three days of returning to school to receive said work from their teacher. Students and teachers will then decide on an appropriate amount of time to complete and return said work to the teacher.
Students absent from school in conjunction with school-sponsored activities shall be counted as present and shall be allowed to make up all work for missed classes just as with an excused absence.
Checking Out During the School Day
If students must go home during the school day (Excused Absence), we request that parents send a note, make a phone call, or come into the office to sign their student out of school. Any student leaving school must sign out through the office. This policy is to help ensure additional safety for all students and parents. Students can only be picked up and checked out by their parent or legal guardian.
Only those listed, by the parent, on the school’s “emergency release form” that is kept on file in the school office can check out a student during school hours. Please make sure the information listed is accurate and up to date. If your child becomes ill or is injured while at school, we can only call you if you have provided us with updated information.
Student Tardies
Punctuality is an essential life skill. Teachers work hard to plan and deliver lessons to their students. When students are tardy, it is difficult for teachers to catch up. Most of the time, tardies can be avoided with attention to detail and a willingness to be conscientious of being where one is supposed to be, when they are supposed to be there. There are rare times when being tardy is unavoidable and we understand this. As such, students with one through four tardies, in a given term, will resolve the issue with their classroom teacher. Students with five or more tardies, in a given term, will be considered in violation of our attendance policy and referred to the school administration for further action.
Students Kept After School
No student will be detained after regular school hours until his/her parent or guardian has received prior notification. Arrangements will be made in advance, including the day and the amount of time the child will be kept after school. If a bus student is kept after school, prior arrangements for transportation home will be made at the time of the prior notice. If a child misses the bus through his/her own choice – or neglect – the child and/or parents will be responsible for arranging transportation home.
Student Visitors
Student “guests” are not permitted to visit or attend classes during the regular school day. This results in additional work and responsibility for our teachers and often distracts students from the educational process. This has also been identified as a potential safety issue in our school. Jr. High and High School students are not allowed on the Copper Canyon Elementary School campus during the regular school day without permission from the administration.
Grading Policy
TCSD recently passed a new policy on grading and can be found on the district website located in section 05000 number 5054. It states that student work and assessments will be based on standards from the Utah Core. The
report card will reflect students’ accurate academic proficiency in relation to course standards. Grades will be updated weekly on SIS and final grades must include a minimum of 7-9 scores per subject with 3 of them being assessments. The final grade weight is; assessment, no more than 50%; homework, no more than 10%, and classwork, the remaining percentage of the whole. The K-12 grading scale can be found with board documents at the end of this packet.
Homework Policy
Homework is a valuable learning tool when it supports the goals of education, is purposeful and meaningful. It should require thought, effort, and the competent demonstration of learned skills. Homework should have a focus on learning that helps students acquire knowledge of skills through experience, study or taught.
More information and details of this police may be found on the district website under board docs. It is policy 0500 number 5053.
Failing Notice Policy
The Copper Canyon faculty will strive to help all students achieve academic success. The primary responsibility for passing grades rests with each individual student. There is a direct relationship between student effort and a desire to do well, and students earning good grades. Unfortunately, there are some students who earn failing grades. At any time that a student is failing, Copper Canyon teachers will notify parents of a student’s failing performance. This notification will be accomplished with the parent before it is too late to correct the situation. Notice will be given to parents by telephone or in writing. All teachers will keep appropriate documentation of notification concerning this policy.
Dress Code and Standards
The purpose of establishing dress standards is to provide an educational atmosphere where students can feel comfortable in striving to achieve their potential. Proper dress and grooming greatly affect the attitudes and behaviors of our students. Just like when parents go to work, there is a standard of dress that is acceptable and that which is not. Dress should never interfere with the learning environment of our school or prove hazardous to the safety of students. Disruptions caused by immodest, unsafe, unclean, or inappropriate dress styles cannot be tolerated in an educational setting. As such, we encourage and expect all students to be mindful of proper dress and grooming habits by:
-
Wearing clothing that is clean, modest, and in good repair.
-
Wearing clothing that is safe and appropriate for school.
-
Wearing proper footwear that protects your feet from harm.
It is our desire that this clarification will not place any undue burden on students or parents but will help to clarify the policy and reinforce standards that exhibit modesty and support mutual respect and safety for everyone at Copper Canyon Elementary School.
Students will be expected to give proper attention to personal cleanliness and neatness of dress. Proper hygiene care and clean clothing will be encouraged for everyone. Hair should be worn to conform with good grooming standards. Learning to comply with this dress standards policy is an integral part of each student’s education.
At Copper Canyon Elementary School, we want to ensure safety, mutual respect, and a positive school climate for all students and the entire school community. Therefore, the following articles of clothing are expressly prohibited at our school:
-
Sunglasses inside the school building.
-
Pajamas and slippers.
-
Bare-midriff tops, halter tops, spaghetti-strap tops, or tube tops.
-
Shorts, skirts, dresses worn any higher than mid-thigh length.
-
Apparel that poses a concern; baggy pants that can conceal dangerous items or that show under-clothing.
-
Spiked clothing or jewelry, wallet chains, neck and wrist bands and chains that could cause choking or harm to others.
-
Gang-related clothing and/or apparel.
-
Clothing that depicts or suggests criminal or illegal activity, or violence.
-
Clothing with obscene or suggestive images, or messages.
-
Apparel, jewelry, or accessories that advertise or advocate alcohol, drugs, or tobacco.
-
Clothing that depicts disrespect toward any other race, political party, culture, religion, or gender.
-
Clothing that needs repair… cut, ripped, torn, or mutilated.
We don’t relish in being the fashion police, but in order to provide safety throughout the school.
The dress standards of Copper Canyon Elementary School will be strictly enforced. Thank you for your understanding and assistance!
Traffic Safety Information
Parents, please make sure you are aware of the following safety information printed below. Read and study the material and then share this information with your children:
-
All students, parents, and staff members should always follow the directions of the school crossing guard .
-
Parents should drop-off and pick-up their children in the parking lot located on the north side of the building. Please do not have children cross Broadway Avenue unless with the crossing guard. Student drop-off is allowed in the morning in the half-circle at the front of the school, but please remember that this is a drop-and-go traffic flow. Waiting and parking are not allowed until after 9:00 a.m. in the half-circle area. Pick-up at the end of the school day is not allowed in the front half-circle of our building. Please pick your student up in the parking lot on the north side of our school. Please be courteous, mindful, and watchful of students, supervising staff, and each other.
-
Do not drive into, drop-off, or pick-up students in the School Bus Zone located adjacent to the kindergarten classrooms on the north side of the building.
-
Only Faculty and staff should park on the south side of the building. No private vehicles are allowed on the south side of the building. The staff parking area is not a drop-off or pick-up area. Do not block the driveway to the south parking lot to pick up your students. Students who dart between moving and parked cars are in great danger.
-
Parent/Visitor parking is reserved to the north parking lot adjacent the School Bus Zone.
-
Please comply with all speed limits, traffic signs, and handicapped access designations. This will help make all students as safe as possible and allow patrons a more pleasant travel experience.
-
All bicycles, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, etc… must be walked on school property. All property must be placed in the bike rack and should be secured with a lock during the school day. No riding, boarding, blading, wheeling, etc… is allowed on school property at any time. Do not plan to store scooters, skateboards, etc. in the classroom during the day, as there is not enough space to accommodate this.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT OF OUR SAFETY GUIDELINES!!! We appreciate all you do to ensure the safety of our students at Copper Canyon Elementary School.
Safe and Drug Free Schools
The goal of the Tooele County School District regarding school safety is to be proactive. The district will attempt to anticipate problems to ensure the safety of all students and staff, the school and its facilities, and the community in general. ALL students and parents will be required to sign a form indicating that they have access to a digital or hard copy of the Tooele County School District’s “Safe School Conduct and Discipline Policy.” This policy is included as a part of this Copper Canyon Elementary School Handbook. To help assure the general community of our concern for school security and to create an environment free of intimidation and coercion, the following procedures prohibiting inappropriate behavior will be incorporated.
Weapon Control
The Gun-Free School Zones Act prohibits the possession or discharge of a firearm on or within 1,000 feet of public, private, or parochial school grounds. Those convicted of a Gun-Free School Zones Act violation face imprisonment for up to five years, a fine of up to $250,000, or both.
Similarly, if school officials determine that objects may be used as weapons which pose an immediate threat of harm or injury to students or staff, these objects will be confiscated. This includes all chains, pocketknives, and any other items that could be used as weapons.
Alcohol, Drugs, and Tobacco
The Tooele County School District prohibits any use, possession, distribution, sale, or being under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, imitation controlled substances, and any other similarly harmful substances, or drug paraphernalia. This policy applies during school hours, before and after school while on school property, at all school or district approved or sponsored events and activities, and when the actions affect the mission or operation of the Tooele Public Schools.
In addition, any prescribed controlled medications must be administered in accordance with school district policy. All violations of this policy will be reported to parents, will receive school action, and will be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for review and appropriate action.
Gangs
A gang is defined as a group of more than two individuals with a unique name, identifiable marks, or symbols who may claim a territory or turf, who associate on a regular basis, and who engage in antisocial or criminal behavior. Gang activities are prohibited in school, on school property, and at all school approved or sponsored activities and events. The wearing of gang-related apparel and paraphernalia is also prohibited as per (Oleson v. Board of Education, 1987).
Students aligning themselves with gangs or involve themselves in gang activity may be suspended or expelled from school under the provisions stated in the Tooele County Administrative Guidelines for School Suspension, Sections 5.29 through 5.35.
Bullying, Fighting, and Disruptive Behavior
The staff at Copper Canyon Elementary School strives to provide a safe environment for the emotional, intellectual, physical, and social development of its students, staff, and patrons. Whether in the classroom or elsewhere on campus, those behaviors which disrupt the educational atmosphere of the school are considered inappropriate and will not be tolerated. Bullying, fighting, harassment, and unnecessary roughness, of any kind, causes an unsafe condition to exist.
Students and adults are encouraged and expected to “seek assistance” in resolving conflicts rather than solve them through aggressive behavior. Copper Canyon Elementary School has a zero-tolerance policy
for aggressive behavior. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated. Students who engage in this kind of activity may be suspended or expelled under terms of this policy. Infractions of this policy will result in immediate parental notification, will receive school action, and may be referred to local law enforcement for further action as deemed appropriate by school administration.
Bullying means aggressive behavior that causes harm or distress; exists in a relationship in which there is an imbalance of power or strength and is repeated over time. A person is being bullied or victimized when he or she is exposed to negative actions on the part of one or more persons.
Types of bullying include:
1. Physical Bullying: Hitting and/or Punching.
-
Verbal Bullying: Teasing and/or Name-Calling.
-
Non-Verbal or Emotional Bullying: Intimidation through gestures, social exclusion, and relational aggression.
-
Cyber-Bullying: Sending insulting, threatening or harassing messages by telephone, computer, or electronic messaging.
Theft
At Copper Canyon Elementary School students are expected to show respect for each other’s personal property and for school property, materials, and equipment. Theft is a crime and will not be tolerated.
Any incidence of theft will result in immediate parental notification, school action, and restitution. Also, depending on the seriousness of the offense, local law enforcement agencies will become involved if deemed appropriate by school administration.
Destruction of School Property
Students are expected to take pride and ownership in our buildings, grounds, equipment, and facilities at Copper Canyon Elementary School. Students who willfully destroy school property through vandalism, littering, or carelessness will obligate their parents to be financially responsible for the repair and/or replacement of the damaged property. School administration may elect to have the student complete community service hours through the school as part of their restitution. If deemed necessary, local law enforcement agencies will be involved.
Search and Seizure
School authorities are responsible for promoting safe and effective operations of the school and are charged with protecting the health and safety of all students and staff. The following search and seizure guidelines are provided to ensure the welfare of all:
-
Students shall be free from searches unless there is reasonable suspicion to believe that they are concealing something that may be of immediate danger to themselves or the rest of the school community. School officials may request students to remove all items from their pockets and/or other personal property.
-
Desks and all other student storage facilities remain the property of the school and are legally subject to inspection and search at any time. If a school official reasonably suspects that a particular desk or area may contain items that are considered to be dangerous, prohibited or stolen they are subject to search at the discretion of the school administration. This is in accordance with policies, rules, and regulations of the Tooele County School District.
Desks are not designed for the storage of money or other valuables. Students are responsible for their desks assigned to them and for their own personal property. Valuable property should not be brought to school. Students who store valuables in their desks do so at their own risk. The school is not responsible for items that are lost, stolen, or damaged.
Criminal Trespass
Under Utah Law, a person is guilty of a misdemeanor if he/she enters or remains on school property without authorization when notice against such entry or remaining has been given personally be a school official, or by signs posted to prevent trespassers, or by a current order of suspension or expulsion (SS 53A-3-503).
Adults and students without lawful business on school premises will be instructed to leave by school officials. In the event that adults or students violate trespass laws or do not comply with the direct order of school officials to vacate, appropriate law enforcement officials will be contacted as necessary.
Bomb Threats and False Fire Alarms
Bomb threats and falsely set fire alarms are not only a serious disruption of school time, but they also present a danger to all students, faculty, and staff within the building. Moreover, these issues constitute felony offenses and will be dealt with severely. Copper Canyon Elementary has adopted a zero tolerance toward anyone involved with bomb threats or falsely set fire alarms. Students engaged in such activity are subject to suspension and referral to local law enforcement agencies.
Obscenity, Pornography, Profanity, and Vulgarity
The faculty, staff, and student-body should not have to be exposed or expected to endure obscenity, pornography, profanity, or vulgarity. Therefore, any and all forms of abusive language, obscene gestures, immoral or indecent acts (whether verbally, in pictures, or in writing) is deemed inappropriate within the school environment and is expressly prohibited.
Technology Usage and Fraud
Computers, internet, and other technological equipment are used at Copper Canyon Elementary School to facilitate the educational process. Hardware and Software is to be used in accordance with the “Use Agreement” information attached in this handbook. Students who violate said technology agreement will lose their technology privileges at Copper Canyon Elementary School. The cost of repairing, restoring, or replacing hardware, software, or data due to willful damage will be an obligation of said student and his parents.
Telephone
Students are discouraged from using the school telephone except in emergency situations. Students must have a pass from their teacher in order to use the phone during the school day. Should parents or students have an emergency, please contact the office staff. This will allow us to help protect teaching and learning time.
Cell Phones and Personal Electronic Devices
Tooele County School District recognizes that technology can enhance teaching and learning. Student-owned/provided devices should be viewed as a resource. Utilizing student-owned devices is subject to common sense and legal guidelines. Teachers and administrators with the permission of parents are encouraged to utilize student owned devices as part of the teaching and learning process.
-
Students are permitted to utilize cell phones/personal devices in the classroom only if required by the classroom teacher.
-
Students with 4G/5G access are encouraged while on district property to connect to the District’s wireless where Wi-Fi based devices are filtered. This is a CIPA (Children’s Internet Protection Act) requirement.
-
Students must receive permission from their parents to utilize texting plans for academic purposes on their personal devices as teachers may use free services effectively utilizing cell phones and texting devices into student response systems.
-
Students and employees are solely responsible for their devices. The District will not provide charging devices, maintain, repair, replace, program or troubleshoot personal devices. Any and all texting, cellular data and maintenance plans are the sole responsibility of the student or employee.
-
Students must place phones on silent and they should be kept in the students backpack and not on their person while at school. Personal devices must in no way negatively impact classroom instruction or network resources.
-
If students are not following the above guidelines, cell phones/watches may be taken by the classroom teacher and the following guidelines will be implemented:
-
1st offense- Device will be taken and returned to the student at the end of the school day.
-
2nd offense- Device will be taken and given to the office staff. Parents will be contacted and asked to pick up device at their earliest convenience. After this offense takes place and students continue to bring device to school, they will be required to give their device to the teacher upon entering the classroom each morning and it will be returned at the end of the school day.
-
Personal Devices Used in an Unethical, Illegal or Immoral Manner.
-
It is expressly forbidden to operate a camera or recording device in a restroom or locker room. Anyone found to be recording others in such locations may be prosecuted according to Utah Code.
-
Sending threatening, harassing, intimidating, offensive, vulgar, profane, obscene text and/or photos, cyber bullying or coercive communication with others may result in disciplinary action taken and/or civil-criminal charges filed.
10. This policy replaces the old cell phone policy 5.40 adopted in April of 2007. This policy does not change the existing district Acceptable Use Policy.
Addressing Teachers and Staff Members
Toys and Electronic Toys at School
We appreciate the fact that most children are willing to share but bringing toys to school generally creates distractions. As such, toys and electronic games/devices, laser pointers, etc. ARE NOT ALLOWED AT SCHOOL. If brought, they will be confiscated and returned only to a parent. Should students repeat this behavior the item will be returned to a parent only at the end of the school year. Any item brought for Show-and-Tell, as approved by the classroom teacher, should be checked-in with the classroom teacher immediately upon arrival at school.
Lost and Found
Copper Canyon Elementary School will have a bin to store items that are found on our campus. Items not claimed from the lost and found bin will be donated to a charitable organization in our community. Please put your children’s name on all backpacks, coats, jackets, gloves, hats, lunch boxes, etc. This will help us identify items and return them to their proper owner.
Parent Visits
Parents are always welcome at Copper Canyon Elementary School. During the course of the school year, you may wish to confer with one of the teachers or to visit a classroom however, we would appreciate a prior call to make an appointment in advance. A teacher’s primary responsibility is to effectively and explicitly provide instruction. Potential problems can arise with interruptions to the classroom. Therefore, no one should go to a teacher’s room without first making an appointment. Parents visiting the school must have a PASS from the office. We also ask that parents respect teacher’s personal time outside of school and discourage calling teachers at home before or after school hours.
Placement Requests
A great deal of thought, discussion, and evaluation is given to placing each of our students in the appropriate class. We work very hard to establish classes that are balanced, fair, and equitable for both students and teachers. We appreciate your understanding and support in working with your child, the teacher, and the administration in order to make each child’s placement a successful and rewarding one.
Fundraising Activities
All fundraising activities must be pre-approved by the administration. This includes any student, parent, teacher, staff, or PTA activity occurring on school property. A completed fundraising form must be submitted and approved prior to the beginning of the activity. Copper Canyon Elementary School, according to Tooele County School District policy, may have no more than two school-sponsored fundraising activities in our community during a given school year. All funds received, regardless of the source, should be deposited directly with the school financial secretary. All expenditures of monies must be conducted through the school financial secretary as well. No Door-to-Door selling is allowed with fundraisers.
Discipline Philosophy
Tooele County School District affirms that every student is a person of value and is committed to helping each student reach his/her potential. In order to be successful in teaching basic academic skills, we must also teach basic behavior skills. Students who develop appropriate behavior skills will be better prepared to learn and achieve academically. Discipline is about changing unacceptable behavior to acceptable behavior.
As a staff, we believe that discipline should be directed toward correcting and improving individual and group behaviors, and toward creating and maintaining a positive atmosphere conducive to learning, order, safety, and personal growth. Teachers have the right to teach, students have the right to learn, and each of us must strive to make this a reality to ensure an orderly educational environment.
As students and citizens of Copper Canyon Elementary School, we have the responsibility to see that school rules, procedures, and expectations are followed. In general, most discipline infractions will be handled between the student and classroom teacher. Parents will be contacted if the problem becomes a deterrent to learning in the classroom. In the event of a serious or continuous infraction, the student will be referred to the school administration for intervention and/or consequential action.
Immunization Requirements
Any immunization record provided by a licensed physician, registered nurse, or public health official may be accepted by the school official as a certificate of immunization if the type of immunization given and the dates given are specified and the information is transferred to an official certificate for immunization and verified by the district in which the school is located. Parents and guardians whose children are lacking necessary immunizations will be notified. Students whose immunizations are not in accordance with state law may be allowed to attend school under a conditional enrollment. Parents and guardians whose students are prohibited from school attendance for failure to comply with immunization requirements will be referred to the appropriate agency for medical neglect.
Emergency Preparedness Plan
Students will be instructed on the basic rules and procedures for handling disaster emergencies. Drills are conducted throughout the year to assist with responding to crisis i.e.… Intruders, Weapons, Fire, Gas Leaks, Severe Storms, Earthquakes, Bomb Threats, In-Place Sheltering, etc. If you feel that your student does not know how to respond to these kinds of crisis while at school, please notify your student’s classroom teacher or principal. In the event we should evacuate the school and relocate to another place, our primary reunification site away from the school is Middle Canyon Elementary and then LDS chapel on Cedarview Circle. Should that not be available, or we need a different location, our secondary reunification site is at the Deseret Peak Complex.
